UEFA turn down Juventus postponement appeal
MANCHESTER, England, Feb 19 (AFP) © 2003 AFP
Manchester United's Champions League clash with Juventus at Old Trafford Wednesday night will go ahead as scheduled.
The European football union (UEFA) said in a statement Wednesday Juventus had asked for a postponement after their side was hit by an influenza bug but the request had been turned down.
French defender Lilian Thuram became the latest player to succumb to the virus on Wednesday, leaving coach Marcello Lippi with only 15 senior players.
Goalkeeper Gigi Buffon, defenders Mark Iuliano and Alessandro Birindelli, midfield man Gianluca Zambrotta and striking duo Marcelo Salas and Marco di Vaio, were left behind when the team flew into Manchester Tuesday.
Key man Alessandro del Piero is already out with a thigh injury, giving United a massive advantage as they look to consolidate their position at the top of the group and maintain their 100 percent record.
Del Piero is a major loss for Juve having scored four times in seven Champions League matches.
Croatian international Igor Tudor had also been ruled out with an ankle injury.
Lippi said in his long managerial career he had never been faced with such a situation before.
"It is extraordinary," said Lippi who was forced to cancel Tuesday night's scheduled training session.
"We only have 15 players to start with, plus another three I have brought in from the reserves," he added.
